Environment

Welcome to FABIO’s Environment Program, where we promote sustainable urban living and protect natural resources through clean, non‑motorised transport and community‑driven green actions. Greener mobility reduces congestion and emissions, and we believe that collective initiatives nurture healthier, more resilient cities.

Explore the projects that are transforming Jinja’s environment with bicycles and eco‑activities.

Car-Free-Day

FABIO’s Car‑Free‑Day campaign in Jinja uses the global “Car‑Free‑Day” movement to promote non‑motorised transport (NMT) and sustainable urban living. Under the slogan “My City, My Responsibility,” the event brings together citizens of all ages and abilities for fun rides, bike races, street games, tree planting, a health‑screening camp and a city‑wide clean‑up.

In 2023, more than 1,000 participants joined, city leaders signed a charter committing to NMT support, and the mayor pledged monthly street‑cleaning initiatives. The day raises awareness of congestion, emissions and road safety while fostering an inclusive, people‑focused vision for Jinja’s present and future.

Bicycle Rentals

Ride the Future of Jinja – Our bike‑rental project not only puts affordable mountain bikes and e‑bikes on the streets of Jinja, it fuels community initiatives. Every rental contributes to FABIO’s Cycle‑to‑School program, local youth workshops, and sustainable‑transport campaigns, helping to grow a vibrant cycling culture while supporting education and development across the region.

Motivation Mobility (MoMo)

FABIO and the European Institute for Sustainable Transport (EURIST) launched the Motivation Mobility (MoMo) exchange to link students from Uganda’s St Noa Mawaggali SSS in Jinja with peers at Sachsenwaldschule and Wentorf Gymnasium near Hamburg.

In 2022, ten Ugandan teens traveled to Germany, staying with host families, attending school, and touring bike‑friendly Münster, the Miniaturwunderland museum, and Hamburg’s HafenCity. Together they discussed sustainability and built models of greener cities.

The following year, ten German students visited Jinja, exploring the KCCA offices, the NMT corridor, the railway museum, and participating in workshops on plastic up‑cycling and green‑city design.

Read the success stories to find out more about how participants gained a real‑world view of how mobility shapes livability, turning them into ambassadors for sustainable solutions.
